Electricity Price Comparison
What do you do when the electricity prices just keep going up and up because the prices of the oil and gas used to produce the electricity, have rocketed?
Then when the fuel prices finally do come down your electricity bills does not. This is the dilemma I found myself in recently where each time I had a statement is seemed to say I still owed the electricity company over £1,200 in spite of having a direct debit each month for £100. OK I know fuel prices have gone through the roof and cost have increased across the board, but when fuel prices did return to lower levels my electricity bill, which had doubled, has not come down again!
As an extra whinge – at the same time domestic oil trebled in price and so I was faced with a double whammy.
I talked to my Electricity provider and I told them that if something was not done pretty soon I would be looking for a better deal with another provider.
There are websites which specifically do an electricity price comparison so you can find the most competitive prices. Well they talked to me about reducing the amount of electricity we use and having a monitor to work out which items use most power, but I already knew about all that. Suddenly it seemed they were putting all the responsibility on to us as the customer to reduce our bills, but there are some things that I just cannot change. As we do not have an option of gas in our village we are an all electric kitchen and ovens for instance can use a huge amount of energy.
We have introduced electricity saving cooking items into the kitchen that only use the equivalent of a light bulb and are extremely effective. We have also installed a solar water heating system and when the customer service operator looked at the electricity used over the year he found we had significantly reduced our demand for electricity by 4,000 units, but our bill was still double the amount of the previous year. It appears when you look at the different companies offering energy services they are also helping us to be more energy efficient at the same time.
I do not have a problem with that but when I have done all I can and the bills are still double it feels like they are ducking their responsibility and they are saying it’s not their fault if the bills are high, it’s us for using too much power.
What chance do we have to make savings if the electricity companies are hanging on to the profits and not passing the savings on to the consumer?
It seemed like they were not even trying to do their bit to help. This was when I decided to take action and go to a website that did an electricity price comparison.
