As we do not have gas in our village I am not able to discover a tariff for gas. Every gas electricity price comparison website I went to had a form to be filled in with the details of your current supplier and usage.
What I found irritating was that none of the comparison sites ever quote a direct tariff for any of the services or power supplied. I do vaguely remember doing a search some years ago and there was a table itemising the different rates of the different suppliers.
Obviously they have changed that system realising that anyone making an enquiry is likely to be a hot potential customer.
How can you make an informed decision if you don’t have all the relevant information to make a gas electricity price comparison? It seems there are different packages wrapped up as offers and if you are not sure how much gas and electricity likely to be used then you cannot work out how much you will have to spend.
If there was a unit rate listed then it would be fairly obvious which suppliers are cheaper, unless of course they have extras added on such as a service charge. I did notice in one tariff the unit price was significantly lower but there was a service charge attached. All these things need to be taken into account when trying to find the best deal for your fuel.
The price of energy itself typically accounts for around two thirds of the electricity and gas bills you pay. Other costs include distributing that energy to your home and implementing the government’s various environment and social schemes.
These schemes are designed to help the UK to meet legally-binding targets for increased renewable energy and reduced emissions of carbon dioxide and to help households make big savings in the energy they use. Energy efficiency schemes for customers, like loft insulation and cavity wall insulation, are proving to be successful. They are already helping customers use less gas and reduce their typical bills by around £120.
Some years ago I had two friends who independently moved house roughly at the same time. Because they both moved to areas where there was a gas supply, they were able to have both their gas and electricity with the same provider.
The company they both registered with were offering a special deal for the over sixties where they paid a fixed amount per month for both gas and electricity and they could use as much as they wanted. The amount was something small like about £30 and at the time I was paying £60 per month for electricity alone.
Because I live in an area where there is no gas I was not able to benefit from this offer. There is no comparable deal for oil and electricity so I have lost out. Of course there is no call for a gas electricity price comparison for my friends and when the huge rises in fuel prices arrived they were unaffected and were laughing all the way to the bank.
